Yaakov Yosef ben Razel in Japan (UPDATE)

Below is a report from Rabbi Aron Nezri on the status of Yaakov Yosef ben Reizel:

CHIBA, Japan – The saga of Yakov Yosef Grunwald may be nearing its end, as a letter from the Japanese Ministry of Justice indicates they will now go on to the final chapter and will shortly notify of the release date where he will be transferred to Israel to officially serve the remainder of his six-year sentence in Israel.

The latest communication from the Japanese chided Israel for not abiding by the prisoner transfer agreement with previous prisoners but indicated they will release Yakov Yosef shortly.

Basically, they are satisfied that everything is OK and they will now be dealing with the conclusion of this matter, and that they will, without giving any dates, decide on a timeline for collecting Yakov Yosef.

In the nine months since Yakov Yosef’s appeal was rejected in the High Court in May 2011, his askonim and legal team had been concerned that the lengthy stay indicated the Japanese were reluctant to release him before completing his two thirds of his sentence. But the Japanese missive explained that they were upset that Israel had released the youngest of the 3 bochurim before he even finished serving two thirds of his sentence as required by Israeli law, and in addition they miscalculated the sentences of previous transferred prisoners. Israel had discounted a third of all sentences, including the number of days the prisoner was supposed to serve in lieu of payment of a fine. That amounts to an extra day for every 10,000 Yen owed.

These extra days, called “working days” as opposed to the regular “serving days,” may not be discounted for good behavior, something Israel had been doing until now.

They asked Israel that from now on they should not do this anymore. Israel has as well in response sent an apology in relation to the release of the youngest of the three boys, Yossi, who was released before finishing his two thirds that has caused the major delay in transferring Yakov Yosef. Its is clear that Yakov Yosef was the one to pay a heavy price for that.

Japan has hinted broadly already in the past that they wanted Yakov Yosef to serve at least two thirds of his sentence in Japan before transferring him. That date will be reached on April 2, according to the most lenient interpretation of the law.

But the Japanese have no problem sticking toward that version. I now expect that during March they will send a final reply, and in that final reply they will tell the Israelis to come to collect him. That will be at the end of March or the beginning of April.” As we are now only a month before the end of Yakov Yosef's two thirds, on his arrival to Israel, Yakov Yosef will now not enter a prison at all, but instead will come immediately before a parole board where he will be released very shortly after. He will be kept under some sort of detention until the release has been ordered. This procedure will hopefully be rushed and completed in days.

The other two bachurim arrested together with Yakov Yosef are already back in Israel. Yossi Bando has been out on parole since Jan of 2011, and Yoel Zev Goldstein was acquitted in August.

We, his brothers worldwide, can do what Yidden have done throughout the ages, to create a change across the world. By opening our hearts and davening for Yaakov Yosef, we can expedite his transfer. Abortion & Spilling Seed, הפלה ושופך זרע

Many Xian movements are pro-life.  So are Jewish movements. In fact, abortion is one of the transgressions of murder among Bney Noach, under the negative commandment,

שֹׁפֵךְ דַּם הָאָדָם בָּאָדָם דָּמוֹ יִשָּׁפֵךְ כִּי בְּצֶלֶם אֱ־לֹהִים עָשָׂה אֶת הָאָדָם

"He who spills the blood of man within man will his blood be spilled, for in the image of God he made man" (Bereishit 9:6). The phrase "man within man" includes the fetus inside a woman's body (Sanhedrin 57b).  With this in mind, abortion is illegal in the whole world.

However, among Jews, the commandment against murder is a different one, found in the Ten Commandments. In addition, when a fetus endangers the live of his mother, then the live of the mother takes precedence, and abortion when carried out in this situation is permitted.

In short, abortion is also illegal in Judaism.  However, it can be performed if necessary, like in the above scenario, some Poskim say, within the first 40 days since the woman immersed in a mikvah, others say, within the first trimester.  One must consult with a G-d fearing Orthodox Jewish Rabbi for a heter before doing anything like this.  Plus, once given permission, the woman may not go to a gentile doctor to perform the abortion, because all gentiles are bound by the prohibition of murder.

Wasting seed is a very serious transgression for Jewish men, and this applies to even boys below Bar Mitzvah.  Apparently, Er and Onan, the sons of Yehuda who married Tamar, committed this sin (according to Rashi) while they were only seven years old.  It is wise to talk to your sons below Bar Mitzvah about this transgression, as they are liable for this aveira.

For those Poskim who compare abortion to wasting seed, a Jewish woman who has a heter to perform an abortion to save her life, may not go to a Jewish male doctor.  She must go to a female Jewish doctor instead, since a Jewish woman does not have the negative commandment of wasting seed.

The Dangers of Cap Guns, הסכנות עם רובים כובע

I've never heard of this type of "toy" before. But apparently, it's popular in Israel.  There have been dangers associated with these "caps", usually when kept inside a pant's pocket.  Here's a video explaining the dangers.

Rabbi Mordechai Kraft is one of my favorite speakers. He brings the connection between Satan and the Jewish nation.  This is very consistent with the views of Rabbi Mendel Kessin that when the Jews fall, Satan absorbs our kedusha and gives power over to our enemies to destroy us.  In his shiur, "Kabbalistic View of the Gaza Conflict", he demonstrates this relationship through gematria exercises that spell out Satan's name in various levels, versus our enemies in history, including Eichmann, y"s, Hitler, y"s, Sadam Hussein, y"s. He also points out that Satan is only doing the job that Hashem has appointed for him, which is simply, to bring the Jews to do teshuva.  He also brings out the names of Yishmael's sons and interpret how each name is meant for the Jews to do teshuva.

Our long-time enemy, besides Amalek, is the Pelishtim, who lived in Gaza and continues to occupy Gaza.  The gematria of their name "Peleshet", is also identical to Satan's, and their residence, Gaza, when spelled in full, also has an  identical gematria to Satan's.  So, basically, the message is when the Jews fall, the Satan is empowered to bring us to do teshuva through our worst enemies.

Our battle today is not with the Palestinians, they are simply the stick in which the Master uses to beat the dog. Our battle is with Satan.  We have to return Kedushas Yisrael back into our hands, and in this way, we weaken the Satan, and our enemies will go away by themselves.  The god of the Pelishtim, according to Rabbi Kraft, is the fly, which symbolizes licentiousness.  The message is when the Jews exhibit this negative trait of licentiousness, Hashem empowers the nation whose symbol characterizes our misbehavior to suppress us.  Our antidote is of course to be holy, to guard our bris and modesty.  We don't have any other choice.

Clouds of "morning" glory - ענני הכבוד "בוקר"

Tehilim 105:39. He spread out a cloud for shelter, and fire to illuminate the night.

One of the benefits of having NASA is to film one of the myriads of Hashem's glory over the universe.  And this is one of them.  Stretches of clouds that hover over parts of Australia, called the clouds of "morning glory."  I think they should rename it to "Clouds of G-d's Glory."

Here's some info about it:

Explanation: What causes these long, strange clouds? No one is sure. A rare type of cloud known as a Morning Glory cloud can stretch 1,000 kilometers long and occur at altitudes up to two kilometers high. Although similar roll clouds have been seen at specific places across the world, the ones over Burketown, Queensland Australia occur predictably every spring. Long, horizontal, circulating tubes of air might form when flowing, moist, cooling air encounters an inversion layer, an atmospheric layer where air temperature atypically increases with height. These tubes and surrounding air could cause dangerous turbulence for airplanes when clear. Morning Glory clouds can reportedly achieve an airspeed of 60 kilometers per hour over a surface with little discernible wind. Rabbi Matisyahu Solomon and Rabbi Eli Mansour, הרב מתתיהו סלומון והרב אלי מנצור

A partnership between a great Ashkenazi leader and a great Sephardi leader, both from the USA took place recently.  HaRav Matisyahu Solomon, the Mashgiach ruchani of the Beth Medrash Govoha of Lakewood and Rav Eli Mansour, a leader of the Syrian Jewish community participated in strengthening the suffering but brave Sephardi communities in the Former Soviet Union.  Rav Solomon personally paid a visit to Rav Mansour's home to invite him to join him in this endeavor.

Read about the brave episodes of two Jewish teenagers who underwent bris milah at age 13 and pidyon haben at age 20 in this article, posted at the Community Magazine of Brooklyn for Sephardi communities.  When Ashkenazim and Sephardim unite for chesed, Hashem must be smiling. May He bring a sweet geulah for all of us, thanks to partnerships like this one.

Strange booms, בום מוזר נשמע

Many bloggers reported lately about strange, mysterious booms being heard at strange times of the day, sometimes regularly.   Well, Moriya's Place is happy to report that this noise has also been heard in our community this past week -- on Wednesday and on this past Shabbos.  On Shabbos, we heard the noise during lunch and after lunch.  Construction does not occur on weekends over here.  Unfortunately, we cannot disclose our location, but suffice it to say, it is somewhere in the USA.  The sounds we heard resemble that of thunder and explosion, but there were no rain or rain storms.  We did not feel any trembling, however, just heard sounds.  This has to come in during Parashas Yisro, where the Jews experienced thunder, lightning and shofar during Matan Torah.  The best thing is to show you some videos that show similar noises being heard all over the world.







This video illustrates that you should not call 911 if you experience a big boom, as they won't have an answer. Sounds hilarious!


We have yet to hear the "shofar" sounds heard elsewhere, but will keep you posted if and when we encounter it.

It is quite possible that the mysterious booms were caused by minor earthquakes that are rarely felt. We were all prepared to recite the bracha "kocho ugvuraso maley olam!"  Hashem is preparing us for Moshiach! Very exciting.

Moshiach ben Yosef, מושיח בן יוסף

My  understanding of Moshiach ben David is that he comes during a time of peace.  So, after listening to the shiur by Mrs Iris Elyashiv, I was very bothered by the fact that according to her MBD will be here to fight all the wars of Gog uMagog for 27 years.

I did my usual research that makes more sense to me.  According to the sefer, On Eagles Wings, by Hershel Brand, (published in 2002), Moshiach ben Yosef has one primary task to perform -- he will lead the Jewish nation in the wars that accompany the birth pangs of MBD, including the war of Gog uMagog.  According to AbarBanel, Rabbi Akiva believed Bar Kochba was the Moshiach only because he thought he was Moshiach ben Yosef.

Because it was an accepted tradition among the Jewish nation that Moshiach ben Yosef will precede Moshiach ben David. He will not come to perform justice and charity, but solely to fight the wars of G-d and to take vengeance on their oppressors. (Abarbanel, Yeshuos Meshicho 1:4)

As Bava Basra 123b states that "Yaakov saw that Esav's descendants could be defeated only by Yosef's descendants," and Bereishis Rabbah 99:2 supports, "In whose hands shall Edom fall? Those of the "Moshiach of war," who descends from Yosef."  The era of MBY will be a time of great distress and persecution for the Jewish nation, culminating in the death of MBY during the battle against Gog uMagog.

Sukkah 52a states the following:

They will look toward Me because of those who they have stabbed; they will mourn him as one mourns an only child" (Zechariah 12:10).  Why is there a eulogy?  There was a disagreement between Rabbi Dosa and the Rabbis.  One said [the prophecy refers to the eulogy that will take place] upon MBY's death.

Rav Sa'adiah Gaon, in Emunos V'Deos 8:5 writes:

They also said that the catalyst for this will be the rise of a man who is a descendant of Yosef in Har HaGalil.  He will gather the remnants of the Jewish nation and turn his attention to the Holy Temple, since Edom has taken hold of it.  He will live there for a while, and afterward a man named Armelius will fight them and conquer the city, kill and take captives, and the man from Yosef will be slain. The nation will be beset by great troubles at that time, the harshest of which willb e the breakdown of relations between the Jewish people and all the nations [ to the point that the nations] will banish them to the desert ....

The banishment to the desert may have been described in my post earlier here, which would be consistent with the quote above.  The question arises "Why do we need two Moshiachs?"  The answer is if the Jewish nation does teshuva, we don't need to go through the path of MBY, and will merit MBD immediately.  However, if we haven't been doing teshuvah (just take a look around), the events of MBY will occur, and it looks to me like we have been heading towards this direction.  Mrs Elyashiv's shiur only supports this belief of mine, with the exception that she believes MBD will arrive this year and fight Gog uMagog, which is inconsistent with the facts above.

Ultimately, Gog uMagog will be defeated in a miraculous way by Hashem Himself, as is explained in Zechariah 14. MBD is attributed by our Sages to fight his wars (againts the wicked among the Jews and the nations) without  exertion, sword or spear.  "He will strike [the wicked] of the world with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he will slay the wicked" (Yeshayahu 11:4).

Now, I want to make a very "bold" prediction, based on women's intuition, which might be very wrong, but I'm going to say it nonetheless.  I've been following Moshe Feiglin for a while.  I do admire his courage in the past, speaking out against unjust policies set out by US pressures and against past US presidents.  Amazingly, Moshe Feiglin was born in Haifa, and Haifa, is a city built on top of Har Carmel, part of the Western Galil.  I think of all Jews, Mr. Feiglin, if he wins over the Likud leadership, is compatible with the role of MBY.  Call me crazy, but it's just a woman's intuition.  I do not necessarily support his views on everything, because I'm human and am faulty in every which way, but I think if given the opportunity to fight our battles against the nations, he will fit the role of MBY well.

Resources for Modesty for Women

The Jewish women too are responsible for many mitzvos incumbent upon them.  But the most important and most challenging mitzvah for the Jewish woman for all time is the miztvah of tznius.  The mitzvah of tznius encompasses not only dress codes but also interaction with society involving speech and behavior.

Luckily, HaKadosh Baruch Hu has provided many many resources for Jewish women to learn about tznius.  Here are some of them (many of these resources come from ModestAnytime.com, a new but serious website dedicated to the mitzvah of tznius, providing custom-sewn modest and refined garments for Jewish women today).

Why is the mitzvah of tznius so challenging today?  Some of the reasons I can think of include, social media network (no thanks to Facebook, YouTube and the like), more Jewish women in the workforce, and co-ed learning institutions, the rise of Modern Orthodoxy, the lack of modest clothing in the market, the rise of irresponsible Jewish clothing shopkeepers who are ignorant of halachos of tznius, etc.  Women are left with very few choices -- work to support their husbands, abandon their children to the care of others, pursue higher education in order to support better job prospects -- the ugly cycle continues. However, this is not very healthy and has to be broken. Those who work in traditional roles are happier and more satisfied than those who pursue secular feministic ideals.  We have to return to our wholesome, Jewish role models -- Sarah Imenu, Rachel Imenu, Ruth HaMoaviah, Devorah haNeviah -- our mothers of modesty, among others, and seek advice from really, kosher, G-d-fearing Jewish women today.

There are no more excuses to not learn Torah She'Ba'al Peh.  Everything is accessible.

Of course, there is no reward for a non-Jew learning the Oral Torah, in fact, he will be punished for doing so.  But it is incumbent upon all Jewish males to do it.

Siyum HaShas, Israel 2012 סיום הש'ס ישראלי

Today's big Google search is Siyum HaShas 2012.  The Israeli Siyum HaShas for Anglos will be held 3 days after the American one.  The registration for the American event has been closed.  But you can still register for the Israeli event.

JERUSALEM – Three days after the 12th annual Siyum Hashas celebration at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey next summer, thousands of English-speaking devotees of Daf Yomi in Israel will descend on Jerusalem’s Binyanei Ha’uma Convention Center to partake in similar festivities.

The Sunday, August 5 event will feature a unique local program produced by Rabbi Mordechai Kornfeld, rosh kollel of Har Nof’s Kollel Iyun Hadaf, with the encouragement of Agudath Israel of America.

Rabbi Kornfeld, a native of Queens, New York, was also the driving force behind the first mass Siyum Hashas celebration ever held in Israel at Binyanei Ha’uma, which paralleled the 11th Siyum Hashas in America in March 2005.

Seven years ago Rabbi Kornfeld was admittedly somewhat skeptical as to how many people would show up.

“We were very surprised by the large numbers of people from across the entire religious spectrum that showed up to participate in the event,” he told The Jewish Press.

“We expected maybe 3,000 people, but when close to 6,000 people somehow squeezed their way into Binyanei Ha’uma in order to have a share in the celebration, it was a tremendous berachah.”

This time around Rabbi Kornfeld anticipates another record-breaking crowd to take part in the celebration, which will be highlighted by a series of inspiring lectures from some of Israel’s leading rabbis.

“Based on the success of the first event in 2005, we are endeavoring to expand the program and feature different speakers. Last time, the celebration was considered a maverick effort. This time around, we are transforming it into a community service. It’s no longer an oddity. We hope to extend the success and provide a greater inspiration.”

Since its founding in 1996, Kollel Iyun Hadaf has played a pivotal role in the development of Daf Yomi in Israel. Kollel Iyun Hadaf’s many experienced scholars, teachers and writers, a number of whom have already served as community leaders and community rabbis, produce free mailings on the Daf Yomi in English and Hebrew.

Rabbi Kornfeld said Kollel Iyun Hadaf has already produced 16 different collections of Talmudic study materials and is constantly generating more texts.

He believes the success of both Daf Yomi and the Siyum Hashas in Israel is linked directly to the growth of the religious Anglo community.

“When we did the first Siyum Hashas,” he said, “the religious Anglo communities in places such as Beit Shemesh, Modiin/Modiin Illit and Jerusalem were relatively new. Today, we also see young, newlywed Mir Yeshiva bochrim staying in the country, moving to neighborhoods across Jerusalem.

“You also have other American yeshiva students studying in Gush Etzion, Sha’alvim, etc., and staying in the country for years. Thus, the Anglo olam no longer feels isolated as it has become a true community.”

As the 12th Siyum Hashas celebration will take place during the height of the summer vacation season for tourists, Rabbi Kornfeld is confident the event will be a hot ticket.

“We know,” he said, ”that religious Anglos will want to take a break from the Summer Olympics in London, while hundreds of religious teenagers from North America who attend the various summer camps across Israel will almost certainly want to be a part of this fascinating experience.”

Moshiach, Tisha B'Av 5772, מושיח תשעה באב 5772

Moriya's Place is pleased to post about this shiur before anyone else in blogo sphere.

This shiur is for ladies but is applicable to every Jew, I believe. Mrs Iris Odani Elyashiv speaks about Moshiach coming this Tisha B'Av 5772 and quotes many, many sources, previously hidden from us because we were not ready. Now, grab your seat belt, and listen to the shiur, and be inspired to do teshuva to be ready for Moshiach when he comes. Because, after he comes, there is no more chance to do teshuva. Mrs. Elyashiv also speaks about the upcoming war of Gog u'Magog and according to her will continue for 27 years. I don't understand that part.

Here, the Zohar speaks about the 27 years until the end of the century, that in the 73rd year, the war against Yerushalayim will begin, and HKB"H will rain down great hailstones upon the nations of the world, and the period of Mashiah Ben David will begin - that he will be energized to fight the wars of Hashem, and these wars will last 27 years until the end of the century, and then will be the complete unification [of Hashem's Name] and the complete ingathering of the exiles.

So, it seems to me that if MBD comes first before Gog uMagog, there is going to be a lot of war going on which, chas v'shalom, will result in 2/3 of the world being destroyed.  If Gog UMagog comes first before MBD, then the war will only last a few minutes.  Hmm... which one would I prefer?  I would prefer the latter path, of course!  I guess, the excitement about Moshiach coming and having to go through 27 years of war and suffering is not the ideal situation.  But since we have lost our merits of deserving MBD achishenah, we will now have to pay the price for it, suffering with Moshiach.

The most important thing is teshuva.  Rabbi Shimon b. Pazzi said: R. Yehoshua b. Levi said in the name of Bar Kappara: "All who observe the three meals of the Sabbath are spared three calamities: the pangs of the Moshiach, the judgment of Gehinnom, and the war of Gog uMagog. 

Maybe some of you will be distracted by the idea of packing up to go to EY.  Well, do not be distracted and just narrowly-focus on this goal.  Returning to EY without teshuva is not going to save you.  Being in EY is not going to save you. In fact, that is where the brunt of the war of Gog uMagog is going to take place. It has its effects all over the world, I'm sure.  The most important thing is teshuva!  For the men, you must focus on Torah learning, the women, you must focus on the mitzvah of tznius, and encouraging your men (husband and sons) to learn Torah.  Even Mrs Elyashiv is not hurrying up to go back to EY, she is spending the rest of the time teaching Tomer Devorah to encourage us to do teshuva.  Yes, we must have in our minds , preparing to return to EY.  But, let Moshiach lead us to EY, not NBN.

Torah Anytime is not really publicizing this shiur as they would other shiurim, in fact, they are keeping a low profile about it and are not explaining themselves why they are keeping quiet.

With unstoppable tears and broken hearts we regret to announce that last night around 5AM, after hours of fighting and holding on, our precious Ayelet - the heart of our world, the light and strength for so many, could not fight any more.

She put up a serious fight, but her lungs collapsed, her blood pressure dropped and the blood could not get to her huge heart.
