Rabbi Yaakov Hillel, author of Ascending Jacob's Ladder, is an accessible Kabbalist and a Baal Mussar from Yerushalayim. In his shiur, "Mussar in NJ 2010", available at LearnTorah.com, the Rav explains that Hashem relates to the world sometimes in a very high level according to His Divine Plan that is beyond human understanding, and sometimes He deals with the world in a lower level that is based on reward and punishment. Sometimes, Hashem deals with Klal Yisrael as a whole community, and sometimes as individuals. He also explains that as individuals, Hashem relates to us according to how we relate to Him. So, for example, if we think that we are successful because of the might of our hands, our wisdom, our talents, etc., then Hashem relates to us the same way, through the mazalot (constellations). However, if we relate to Hashem through our emunah and mitzvos, then Hashem relates to us directly, and we have an open, direct channel to Hashem. In his shiur, the Rav makes himself accessible by answering difficult questions asked of him. The Rav explains why certain difficult souls are sent to good parents (for e.g. reshaim born to tzadikim), in order to educate these souls well, and why good souls are sent to not so good parents (for e.g. Avraham Avinu to Terach). The Rav refers to the RamChal's works, Derech Hashem, in his shiur as well as the teachings of the Arizal.
