Even though we don't have the Beis HaMikdash today, we still daven for Hashem to accept our "fire offerings" in addition to prayers in the Amidah prayer. Rav Eli Mansour, of LearnTorah.com, tells about the olah (burnt offering) that is only offered after it has been cut up to pieces, that the Kohen Gadol up on high (the angel Gabriel) offers to Hashem. Once in a while, to atone for our sins, Hashem takes one of the pure souls from among us to be "near Him" as an atonement. When the korban is a child (and we have had way too many Jewish children taken away from us), it is a perfect olah offering that atones for our sins, collectively.
